With all these cosmetic items you can get in video games these days, it’s only natural that players want to show them off at every opportunity. To that end, a popular feature in online shooters is the ability to “inspect” a weapon. What that means is, basically, a function that makes your character literally inspect their weapon. It’s almost akin to a taunt in a fighting game, or an emote in a MMO. Since launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hasn’t had this feature, despite other CoD games incorporating it. Now that Season 5 is here, so is weapon inspecting.
How to Inspect Weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone
Season 5 has brought a metric buttload of new features and activities to Modern Warfare and Warzone, but weapon inspecting has turned out to be an early point of interest. It’s easy to understand why, for the reasons above. Call of Duty games are all about the cosmetic unlocks, with weapons not only having tons of attachment options, but also things like skins and goofy charm-like trinkets as well. It may not be practical to check out each other’s gear in the middle of a match, but weapon inspecting gives you a great tool to look at your setup yourself, and position it for sharable screenshots and videos.

If you want to inspect weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone, all you have to do is hold Left on the d-pad. You can only do this while you’re standing or walking, and you have to hold the button for around two seconds before the animation starts. If you’re playing on PC, the default key for weapon inspecting is “i.” This is a fairly lengthy animation, as your character will check out both sides of their weapon, and you have to let it play out. If you do this in the middle of the action, you probably aren’t going to survive.
This is a great feature, one that many folks in the community have been confused about not having it available from the beginning. But it’s here now, and it’s going to add that extra, little bit of punch to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare customization experience. It’s also going to be, inevitably, used as a way to show off and taunt after a good kill. But if you’re just trying to share your kits, it’s a great opportunity for that. Just hide in a corner and tap that share (or equivalent) button to save a local screenshot on your console.
