When you aren’t busy learning spells or attending classes in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, you may find yourself having to duel with other students at Hogwarts. Duels are turn-based combat scenarios that allow players to put their magic wand to good use. In this guide, we’ll explain how dueling works in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery and will offer some tips on how to win each duel.
How to Duel in Hogwarts Mystery
The duel system in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery works similarly to a game of rock-paper-scissors. Each duel has two phases, a duel phase and an action phase. During the duel phase, players must choose one of three different Stance types in an attempt to counter their opponent’s move.
The three types of combat stances are Aggressive, Defensive, and Sneaky. Each Stance can counter and be countered by one of the other two Stances. It’s up to the player to predict which Stance their duel opponent will use and try to choose the Stance that counters it. Here’s how each Stance type breaks down in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery:
- Aggressive Beats Sneaky – Aggressive spells are the most damaging types of attacks.
- Defensive Beats Aggressive – Defensive spells can allow your character to recover health.
- Sneaky Beats Defensive – Sneaky spells tend to disarm your opponent or catch them off guard.
If your Stance beats your opponent’s during the duel phase, you will then get to choose a spell to perform on your opponent during the action phase based on the Stance you chose. Most spells will also grant you a stat bonus afterward. In the case of a tie, Stamina will be granted to whichever duel competitor needs it more. The duel ends when the Stamina bar of one of the duelers is fully depleted.
It’s important to note that your character’s Attribute Levels are what determine your dueling strength in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. The higher your Attribute Level, the more impactful certain combat moves will be during a duel. Try to level up each attribute as much as possible by playing through the story and friendship quests to improve your odds during duels.
Once you get the hang of how duels work in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, duels can be a great way to earn Gems and additional XP to level up your character. Duels can cost some coin, but the rewards are worth it.
