If you haven’t yet tried out this indie game, we wrote out a game guide on How to Play Friday Night Funkin’ here. Be sure to read the whole guide as we address a few key items you need to know before jumping in!

Friday Night Funkin’ is a fun and addictive 2D-styled, indie, rhythm game available on itch.io and Newgrounds. The expanded ‘Full Ass Game’ was successfully funded on Kickstarter but you don’t need to wait for new content once you finish what’s available.

While you’re waiting for the upcoming and expanded version of the game, you can keep the music going by using fan-created mods available on GameBanana and other mod-hosting websites.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to download and use mods, while also showing you some of the best mods to check out first.

How to Get Started With Mods

To get started you will first need to download the game from itch.io. In our previous article, we explained the game can be played in-browser on Newgrounds and itch.io, which is true but to use mods the game must be downloaded.

As of writing the only place to download it is on itch.io but the game is still free. You do have the option of donating money to developer ninja_muffin99 which is recommended. Games take a lot of time and energy to create so consider throwing a few bucks at the developer if you can afford it.

Once you’ve downloaded the game then create a new folder on your Desktop and name it something like “Friday Night Funkin’ Mod Source.” Then export the ZIP folder’s contents into the folder you just created and named.

This is to differentiate it as something you’re using for mods. We won’t be using this folder for too much. I’ll elaborate later when it will make more sense.

Now that the ZIP folder’s contents have been extracted to the “Friday Night Funkin’ Mod Source” folder, we’re going to go to GameBanana to get some mods.

You can search for Friday Night Funkin’ or, as of writing, click the Friday Night Funkin’ icon directly to the right of the GameBanana logo on the home page.

This may seem overwhelming at first but it’s just because there’s a lot of content. Take a deep breath and scroll down a little before navigating to the Mods section on the right side of the page.

You can also click this direct link

Once you’re there you can grab any mod you want and follow along with the steps below. The process will likely be the same if you go somewhere else for your mods but we’re going to limit it to this site for the purposes of this guide.

Let’s start with the first mod I’d recommend and consider to be among the best mods for Friday Night Funkin’.

Night in the Woods Band Practice – Full Week

If you haven’t played Night in the Woods then definitely go play it as soon as you can but you can enjoy the music even if you haven’t played it. Click here to go straight to the page so you don’t have to search or scroll forever through the endless available mods.

Once you’re on the page, scroll down until you see Files. There are two important things to point out here.

The first thing is the instructions directly above Files. Pretty much every mod you grab is going to have instructions on how to use it. We couldn’t possibly cover every single mod’s instructions because they’re all using and altering the game’s files differently.

Mods aren’t always altering the same data or using the same level assets so it’s important to check the instructions so you know which level to select in Free Play to access the content. It’s less complicated than it sounds so let’s continue with the instructions for this mod.

It’ll all click in your mind after you download and play your first mod. In this mod it says to stick to “Week 1” because those are the sprites they’ve altered. It might work on other weeks but there may be issues, or it might not work at all.

All you need to remember for this one is to stick to “Week 1” and you’ll be all set. Now we’re going to click Download under Files to download this mod.

Once it’s downloaded you’re going to navigate to your Desktop and create a new folder. Call it whatever you want but make sure it’s titled something related to the mod so you can differentiate between different mods.

In this case I’d recommend either the name of the mod (Night in the Woods Band Practice – Full Week) or “FNF – Night in the Woods.” This will be helpful once you start adding more mods to your collection.

This particular mod has everything included and you just navigate to the Application file, which is called Funkin. Double click to start and then you’re off to the world and sounds of Night in the Woods.

A lot of mods are like this one, where the game’s files are contained within it and you’re essentially just downloading, reading specific launch instructions (like which Week/Song to select for the mod), extracting, and then launching.

Earlier in the game’s life, a lot of mods required a little more work, like downloading additional mods that the particular mod utilized or putting a mod’s files into the Assets folder, which is why we have the “Friday Night Moddin Source” folder.

If the game’s main files are ever needed for a mod, then you already have them and can Copy and Paste them into a folder for the mod. In these situations, you’ll create a new folder, call it something related to the mod, Copy + Paste the files from “Friday Night Funkin’ Mod Source” into the new folder, and then move the mod’s files into the Assets folder of the newly created folder.

Thankfully most mods contain everything needed but you will encounter mods that require the aforementioned steps so keep the folder handy for when you need it.

Just remember to always check the instructions for each specific mod. Creators work hard on these and want people to experience them, so they provide instructions in that section, which is directly above Files.

Now that you know how to download and use mods for Friday Night Funkin’, we will go over a few other mods that are worth checking out. You can always search for other mods you like too. The community is extremely creative and if you can think of it, there’s probably a mod for it.

Wii Funkin’ [MAC SUPPORT]

This mod lets you play against Matt from Wii Sports and is a self contained mod. It’s like the Night in the Woods mod, where it has everything needed. You just need to double click on the application file.

This one is really cool and even has a Wii aesthetic, like the Main Menu saying “Press A + B to Start.” You can just hit Enter; it’s just fun and nostalgic to see.

Ronald McDonald

This mod has a few more steps and isn’t as quick as Night in the Woods and Wii Funkin, but you already have everything you need because of the “Friday Night Moddin Source” folder we set up earlier. Just follow the instructions and you’ll be McFunkin in no time.

This mod is wild! Ronald McDonald overhears you and your girlfriend about to eat Burger King at the mall and will not stand for it. It’s also really hard by default but it includes some additional difficulty modes with different speeds.

Through the Beeps and the Boops (LNO Rip/Chart)

This mod is extremely hard but it’s perfect if you’re nostalgic for Guitar Hero III or are looking for some challenge. Make sure to check the instructions as this mod requires the use of an additional mod.

This mod is also only available to play on Hard so you might need to wait until you practice in the game more, unless you’re already a funkin’ master at the game.

VS Impostor: Full Week

This mod is a little sus but it’s also a really cool way to combine two great indie titles. This mod is still being updated at the time of writing too so there may be more Among Us styled content in the near future.

These are just a few of the cool mods available. There are mods that go beyond altering music and graphics too, like this multiplayer mod. You can explore and look for other mods too.

Just make sure to check instructions so you can figure out any specifics outside of the general guidelines covered in this guide. The developer has encouraged the mod scene and is going to make mods much easier to use in the “Full Ass Version” so it’ll eventually be easier to experience community-created content once that releases.

We hope this guide was funkin’ helpful and helps you find and use your new favorite mod!
