Falcon and The Winter Soldier New Captain America and Twist Explained

Let's talk about the end of episode one.

The long-awaited Falcon and The Winter Soldier Marvel series premiered today and it’s left folks asking one big question. The episode sees Sam Wilson (Falcon) coming to terms with the fact that Steve Rodgers is no longer Captain America and Sam can’t take up a role that is not his.

However, the American government clearly has other plans. At the very end of the episode, we see Sam and his sister watching a breaking news broadcast in which the government announces the next Captain America.

Obviously disrespected and angry Sam Wilson watches as a new Captain America wielding the shield is presented to the American people. This is especially rough because the show begins with Sam Wilson returning the shield to the government to be preserved in Captain America’s museum alongside everything else from his legacy.

Who is the new Captain America though and how will he play into the series moving forward? Well, while we don’t know much about him, but long-time comic fans will recognize this character as John Walker, a U.S Agent who becomes Captain America.

John Walker was first introduced in Captain Americas Issue #323. He’s a super patriot and the antithesis of Steve Rodgers in every way. He eventually goes on to take on the mantle of Captain America.

After his stint as the villain known as SuperPatriot he eventually changed costumes and rebranded to be the character U.S Agent in Captain America issue #354.

Later when Steve Rodgers officially retires from the role the government and S.H.I.E.L.D decide that the world isn’t ready for a black Captain America, and that’s how U.S Agent ends up taking the mantle.

We’re not entirely sure how these events will play into the show, but one thing’s for certain. It’s going to cause problems for Sam and Bucky and will likely be a crux of the next five episodes of the series.
