Elder Scrolls Online Elsweyr: How to Kill a Dragon

Do not ... and we can't stress this enough ... try to take out a dragon by yourself unless you're a Warden class.

The Elsweyr expansion is now live on all platforms in The Elder Scrolls Online bringing with it the new Necromancer class in addition to more about the Khajiit and dragons. That’s right, dragons. But keep in mind, this isn’t Skyrim – you’re not the Dragonborn which means taking out one of these bad boys is hard. Really hard. Luckily, we’re here to help.

In the expansion’s main narrative, players will face off against a dragon two main times. After that, you can spot the flying creature out in the wild with a dragon head marker on the map. This event is called Dragon Hunts and just like the Dolmens, it’s open for all. That being said, please please please do not try to take one of these out yourself. Use the region chat, recruit others to help, because the reward is too good to miss out on.

The dragons in Elsweyr have over 14 million health points … yeah, 14 million. It’s a far cry from the “too easy” dragon fights in Skyrim, and for good reason. Players are going to want to be strategic in how they approach this particular battle. Unlike in Skyrim, Flanking can actually cause more harm than good. The dragon will actually know when there are too many players behind it, causing him to utilize his tail to deal some major damage.

Depending on your build, the Necromancer class can be quite squishy, so I actually found that diving right underneath the dragon’s belly to do damage up close and personal was actually a huge help. You wouldn’t think so; close and squish don’t go well together, but it actually worked out perfectly more often than it didn’t.

By flanking, which is counterproductive believe it or not, this triggers the Wing Buffer that also deals a ton of damage. This move also spawns five firey tornadoes, which … yeah, OK – overkill much? Between the tornadoes and the dragon’s expected fire attacks, there are a lot of factors that go into facing off against this level of foe. For many of the attacks, including his Scorch, the easiest way to maneuver around is to actually let the dragon charge you.

Hear me out.

With Scorch, the best way to survive this move is to let the dragon fly right towards you, despite knowing that a trail of fire is to follow. Basically yell “come at me bro” (actually not required) and brace for impact. That, and make sure you have some potions handy because you are going to need them.

Sunspire

For those taking on the Sunspire trial, this 12-player raid will have players take down a golden dragon named Nahviintaas at the Temple of the First Cat. Nahviintaas also has two dragons at his flank as well, each with their own combat mechanics that players must outsmart. We’ll have a more detailed guide for Sunspire here shortly so stay tuned.

Elder Scrolls Online Elsweyr is now available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
