Starfield is a game about choices. And throughout the galaxy, there are factions with staunch philosophies that best represent those choices. Or, at least, represent four different side quests with some unique rewards. But does it matter what faction you pick in Starfield?
Starfield: Does it Matter What Faction You Pick?
In Starfield, four factions dominate the star-studded expanse of the galaxy. There’s the Americore, military-styled faction United Colonies, who occupy New Atlantis on Jemison. There’s the Freestar Rangers, who are headquartered in Akila Cita. Ryujin Corporation, who makes their home on Neon. And finally, the Crimson Fleet, who’ve commandeered an old prison vessel in space.
Each offers a unique quest. But does it matter which one you pick?
The answer, thankfully, is no. You can join all four factions at any time, and they’ll never acknowledge your membership in a competing faction.
To join one of these four factions, for the most part, all you need to do is speak to the recruiter. For the United Colonies, this means speaking to John behind the desk at MAST District for the Freestar Rangers. This means going to The Rock and speaking to Emma after you’ve progressed enough through the main quest. For Ryujin Corporations, you’ll need to overhear the recruiting message in Neon and then head to their office.
The only odd one out is the Crimson Fleet, the faction that is generally a hostile villain in the game. To join their faction, you’ll need to be arrested by the United Colonies and sent on a covert mission to join their ranks. This can be done, I believe, by getting arrested for stealing items. It happened to me after being caught twice. No, I didn’t have Stealth unlocked yet.
But once you join the United Colonies, you’re on the fast track to becoming a citizen in Jemison. Something that’s necessary if you want a house.
