Before Overwatch 2 launched, the Blizzard team announced that it would be combating cheaters by forcing players to add a mobile number to their Overwatch account. This would provide a way for Blizzard to permanently ban cheating players since the account and phone number would be on the ban list.

Here’s the official text from the Overwatch 2 website.

“Starting October 4, 2022, all players across all platforms, including consoles, are required to have a phone number attached to their battle.net account to launch Overwatch 2. The same phone number cannot be used on multiple accounts at the same time, and players can’t use the same phone number to create multiple accounts. A phone number can only be used once when making a new account, and certain types of numbers, including pre-paid and VOIP, cannot be used for SMS Protect..

However, there were some issues with this system where prepaid numbers were not actively working, thus Blizzard had to pull part of this system back.

Pair this with the new First-Time User Experience, which forces players who have a new account to unlock game modes, ranked play, heroes, and more; you’ll stop cheaters from being able to make new accounts and continue cheating continually.

So it’s not your traditional anti-cheat software you see in games like Call of Duty or Valorant, but this is a form of anti-cheat.
