Do Choices Matter in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

Is Ubisoft going full BioWare?

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has received significant changes over time, and most recently we’ve seen dialogue choices enter the fray. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gave you various dialogue options to do things like good cop/bad cop people, and flirt and whatnot.

In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there are choices throughout the campaign at what seem like pivotal moments. But do those choices actually matter, or are they just window-dressing?

The answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. It’s a matter of degrees, really.

There are a ton of dialogue choices that crop up throughout Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but only a small handful of them have the kind of relevance choices “mattering” usually have.

These impact the story’s ending one of two ways, so I’ll make these as spoiler-agnostic as possible. But you probably aren’t reading this too far ahead of closing time.

Do Choices Matter in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

There are five choices here, all of them determining what Sigurd thinks of you in a manner of speaking.

Folks have been referring to them as “strikes,” because making three choices Sigurd doesn’t like will trigger one ending, while two or less grants the other. I wouldn’t call this a good/bad ending situation necessarily, but it’s an apt comparison.

Sigurd Strike Questions:

  • Take or leave the treasure
  • Hang out with Randvi overnight?
  • Defuse an argument?
  • Show Dag some respect?
  • Take Sigurd’s side or Ravensthrope’s?

If you want to get the Sigurd-friendly ending, you’ll need to make agreeable choices that would benefit Sigurd. Otherwise, answer at least three of these prompts in ways you think Sigurd might not be okay with.

Aside from the ending, a number of choices can alter some of the interim storyline scenarios.

Sometimes, such as the situation with Ivarr and King Rhodri, the story will end in the same spot either way. But you’ll have different dialogue as characters react to your choices differently.

While most of the choices beyond the Sigurd strikes don’t “matter,” a small handful of them can impact certain NPCs sticking around in your base settlement. These choices don’t materially alter the game’s story, but it does have those folks hang out in your home base.

Sometimes it isn’t always the “best” choice that leads to this, or making the wrong choice will lock someone off from joining (probably because they died). As you can see, most of the choices in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are just prompts leading to slightly different dialogue lines.

A couple of choices here and there can cause certain characters to stick around. But that doesn’t mean all the choices don’t matter. Those five specific options we listed above will determine which of two endings your game leads to.
