Dead Space is back and looks scarier than ever. On October 4, 2022, the official Dead Space YouTube channel presented a gameplay reveal for the upcoming remake of the 2008 sci-fi survival horror classic from Electronic Arts. The Dead Space Remake is currently set for release on January 27, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In this article, we will take a deep dive into the “Official Gameplay Trailer,” examine its most interesting elements, and show everything that you might have missed.
Graphics
The first stunning feature of the Dead Space Remake is its massive graphical improvement from the 2008 iteration. While that is to be expected with nearly 14 years of advancement in graphics since the first game launched, the trailer truly demonstrated that this remake is bringing the terror of Dead Space to life with improved graphical fidelity and resolution, sure to scare a new generation of fans.

USG Ishimura
The USG Ishimura, an iconic location in the history of gaming, was on full display in the Dead Space Official Gameplay Trailer. The sprawling planet-cracking mining ship, serves as a massive breeding ground for the Necromorph infection, requiring Isaac Clarke, Kendra Daniels, and Zach Hammond to undertake the challenge of navigating, surviving, and not succumbing to madness themselves.
With a number of the original game’s set pieces and memorable locations on display in the trailer, we can only wonder if there might be any new locations of the USG Ishimura created specifically for the Dead Space Remake.
Isaac Clarke
In a departure from the 2008 version, we will actually get to hear Isaac Clarke’s voice in the Dead Space Remake, as the protagonist speaks multiple times in the Official Gameplay Trailer. When Dead Space was initially released, Isaac Clarke did not have any dialogue, and would not become a voiced protagonist until the 2011 sequel, Dead Space 2, but it appears the Dead Space Remake is altering Isaac’s stoic silence.

Survivor Cameos
In one of the more creepy elements of the original Dead Space, during the progression of the story, Isaac crosses paths with a number of survivors of the USG Ishimura in their final moments of life. These sequences show the human toll of the infection from the Necromorph invasion, leading to some highly disturbing sequences.
In an extremely quick montage, the Dead Space Remake trailer demonstrated that we will indeed get to witness these tense moments once again, this time in 4K resolution, 60 frames-per-second.
Necromorphs
One of the elements that made Dead Space such a tour de force of survival horror was its impressive enemy variation, throwing a horde of terrifying “Necromorph” threats at gamers, each requiring unique strategies for defeat if you wanted to live to tell the tale. While not all of the many species of Necromorph were seen in the gameplay first look, Dead Space Remake’s gameplay trailer demonstrated a few of these enemies, which are as follows:
Enemies and Bosses
Slashers
Lurkers
Leapers
Brutes
The Leviathan
Tentacles
Isaac’s Arsenal
With an army of nightmarish monsters to go up against, Dead Space provides gamers with a smorgasbord of weapons to dismember and annihilate the Necromorph threats that stand in Isaac’s way of finding his missing girlfriend, Nicole. While Isaac’s complete arsenal was not shown in the trailer, the weapons on display were as follows:
Plasma Cutter
Pulse Rifle
Contact Beam
Hydrogen Torch Flamethrower
Stasis
Doctor Challus Mercer
Challus Mercer is an antagonist in Dead Space, and while we do not see him in the gameplay reveal video, his haunting voice can be heard in multiple parts of the trailer. We can only wonder if the mad doctor might have an expanded role in this version of Dead Space, or if the Remake’s story will be identical to its 2008 version.
Authenticity
What stood out most about the Dead Space Official Gameplay Trailer was its authenticity to its predecessor. Motive Studios is bringing back the iconic set pieces, a terrifying cast of enemies, memorable Zero-G moments, and Necromorph fighting mechanics to recapture the magic of the 2008 game, updated for 2023. Clearly, the Dead Space Remake is going to be an experience to remember for series newcomers and long-time fans alike.
