Dark Souls 3 NPC – Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed

Find out how to get married and secure the best ending in Dark Souls 3.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

It’s possible to get married in Dark Souls 3 by finding the Sword of Avowal and performing a specific ritual. You encounter the NPCs Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed many times throughout your adventures playing Dark Souls 3, who are integral to the marriage process. These two NPCs also have a significant impact on the ending you get when you complete the game, so it’s important to know how to play out their story line in the best possible way. Let’s go over the many ways you can and will encounter Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed throughout the game.

Note: Anri’s gender changes based on the gender of your character. If you’re a male, Anri will be female. If you’re a female, Anri will be male.

First Encounter

Your first encounter with Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed occurs in the Road of Sacrifices area, at the Halfway Fortress bonfire. It’s important that you speak with both NPCs until all dialogue is exhausted. Doing so you will obtain the Blue Sentinels covenant item from Horace.

Second Encounter (Optional)

Once you have defeated the Deacons of the Deep boss in the Cathedral of the Deep area, you can go back to the Firelink Shrine and speak with Anri to the left of the thrones. This is an optional task that only gives you a bit more back story. It has no impact on the outcome of this quest or your ending.

Third Encounter

You can meet Anri twice in the Catacombs of Carthus area. She can be found just before the long staircase where you first encounter the giant rolling ball of enemies, and to the side of the bridge just before the High Lord Wolnir boss battle. If you have trouble locating Anri you can find the exact locations in our walkthrough of the area.

When you speak to Anri the second time near the boss battle, do not tell her where Horace is located. If you do this before you find and kill Horace, you will receive the Ring of the Evil Eye, but Anri will die. Don’t worry, you will still get the ring a bit later.

Horace is located in the Smouldering Lake, through a narrow corridor to the right of the main water area. When you go down there, you must fight against Horace. Defeat him to obtain the Llewellyn Shield, then you can return to Anri and mention his location (but not that he’s dead) and Anri will survive. However, it’s not necessary to go back to Anri after killing Horace. In addition, once Horace is dead, the Shrine Handmaid will sell his Executioner’s armor set.

Fourth Encounter

In the Irithyll of the Boreal Valley area, Anri can be found to the side of the room where the Church of Yorshka bonfire is located. Speak with Anri here and you obtain the Ring of the Evil Eye you missed out on earlier. When you reach the boss battle against Pontiff Sulyvahn, summon Anri to help you. The summon sign is right outside the boss chamber by the railing.

Fifth Encounter

Go back to the Firelink Shrine and speak with Yruia of Londer. She is in the same location as Yoel of Londor. She will tell you that the ceremony is ready. At this point you can travel to the tower just before you reach Anor Londo. Normally there’s a hidden wall to the right just as you enter the tower from the rooftops with all of the ranged Silver Knight enemies. However, if you’ve been following this series of quests, the wall is gone and you can head down the hallway to find a Pilgrim.

Speak with the Pilgrim to obtain the Sword of Avowal, then continue to the end of the hallway to find Anri on the ground. Approach Anri and perform the ritual to complete the ceremony. This is the last time you encounter Anri.

Alternate Encounters

If you want to save Anri and not get married (thus not being able to secure the best ending), kill the Pilgrim disguised as a statue in the corner of the room where the Church of Yorshka bonfire is located. Simply attack the statues and kill the Pilgrim. This has to be done before you defeat Pontiff Sulyvahn.

Just before you fight the Anor Londo boss, Aldrich, there’s a summon sign to help Anri on the ground. Help her defeat the boss and Anri leaves the blade with Ludleth (the person sitting on the throne at Firelink Shrine) for you.

If you told Anri about Horace’s death, you can find the NPC again where you fought Horace in Smouldering Lake. If you opted not to tell Anri, you can find the NPC by the graves near the entrance to the Cathedral of the Deep. If you approach Anri in either location you must battle against the NPC. If Anri dies at any point in time throughout this quest, the Elite Knight armor set can be purchased from the Shrine Handmaid.
