The yearly release cycle of the Call of Duty franchise has led to players always being curious about what the next entry in the high-profile series will be even when the current entry is in the early days of its life. This anticipation for the next Call of Duty title is currently being felt by the community of the first-person shooter, thanks to a rumor stating that the 2020 game will be set in the Cold War era. While this Cold War setting has not yet been officially announced, we have gathered together some of the currently known information about the upcoming game together for you.
Call of Duty Cold War
The rumor of the 2020 Call of Duty title being set in the Cold War began following a report by Kotaku that stated the development of next year’s game would be lead by Treyarch following Activision’s decision to transfer the lead development duties over from Raven and Sledgehammer Games. This new entry will reportedly be the fifth entry in Treyarch’s popular Black Ops series.
Call of Duty 2020 has been under 2 names thus far.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Black Ops VSet during the Cold War. Spans the entire 40+ years and incs Vietnam and Korean War. Described as even more gritty and gruesome than Modern Warfare.
I’m not joking.

The Cold War setting and Black Ops 5 name was then the focus of a report by YouTuber Long Sensation, who claimed that next year’s game would supposedly take place during the entire 40+ year period of the Cold War that includes both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
There have also been a couple of tweets from Treyarch Game Director David Vonderhaar that have possibly suggested the studio’s next game in 2020 will be boots on the ground and not have any futuristic movement mechanics. This lack of futuristic movement would coincide with the game being set in the past.

It is important to note that none of this information above has been officially confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt. However, it will not be surprising to see Activision and Treyarch announce that players will be diving headfirst into the Cold War when Call of Duty 2020 is officially revealed.
