Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Unlock the Necromancy of Thay

After you’ve retrieved the Necromancy of Thay from the apothecary cellar located in the Blighted Village, you’ll need to get your hands on a Dark Amethyst to open the creepy tome. To find a Dark Amethyst, we’ll need to travel to a little place called the Whispering Depths and potentially fight some spiders. It’s just as fun as it sounds, but hey, who said opening an evil tome was supposed to be easy?

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Get to the Whispering Depths

The fastest way to get to the Whispering Depths in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to leave the apothecary shop after finding the Necromancy of Thay. Head toward the windmill nearby until you reach the well. Tav or a member of the party will have to pass an Investigation check with a roll of 10 or higher. This will open up the option to enter the well. Do so and you’ll find yourself in the Whispering Depths at last.

With the easy part out of the way, players will have to make a decision before continuing forward, because they’re about to encounter some very terrifying, very aggressive Phase Spiders. The clue’s in the name, but these particular spiders can teleport, which is obviously the stuff of nightmares.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Deal With the Phase Spiders

For those not looking for a fight, you can try using your sneakiest character — more than likely Astarian — and slipping by the monstrosities. Whoever you use, break them away from the rest of the group and have them go invisible.

If you’re looking for a tough early Baldur’s Gate 3 fight, though, this if the place for you. For those at a lower level, this could prove to be even more difficult. Especially with the added challenge of the Phase Spider Matriarch, a massive spider boss that can cause a lot of problems by hatching eggs and adding even more Phase Spiders to the mix. Defeating this beastie will net you the Poisoner’s Robe.

Whichever path you opt for, your end goal here is the same. Past the Phase Spider Matriarch you’ll find her nest, and within the nest the Dark Amethyst. You finally have what you need to open the Necromancy of Thay.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Use the Dark Amethyst

To use the Dark Amethyst to open the Necromancy of Thay, all you have to do is insert the former into the latter. After all your hard work, you can finally open the evil book and have some fun with increasingly difficult Wisdom checks. With Baldur’s Gate 3, nothing is ever simple.

Of course, just because you’ve been so preoccupied with if you could, maybe it’s best to find out for sure what you should do with the Necromancy of Thay.
