Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Use the Adamantine Forge (BG3)

Good enough for Frodo.

Before you head into the thick of Act 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3, you definitely want to get at least one item out of the Adamantine Forge, but this isn’t your average forge meant for standard weapons. Instead, you need to right materials for the job, along with the knowledge that goes into using one of these ancient forges.

How to Craft with the Adamantine Forge in BG3

You need at least one Mithril Ore and one Mould in order to properly use the Adamantine Forge in Grymforge. To use the Adamantine Forge:

  • Insert a Mould into the chamber by the Mould lever.
  • Place a Mithril Ore inside the Crucible, center of the forge.
  • Use the main lever on the edge of the platform.
  • Use the forge lever at the bottom left of the forge.
  • Pick up your new item from the center Crucible.

Adamantine Forge Wakthrough

There are five different Moulds around the Grymforge and Underdark section of Baldur’s Gate. To save some time though, you can check the small room to the left of the massive staircase before the Adamantine Forge. There you can find at least one piece of Mithril Ore and a Mould.

With both of these items, head back to the center of the Adamantine Forge. You need to approach the Mould lever and add one of your Moulds to the machine. Then you can head to the Crucible in the center of the forge platform. Interact with this as well and place the Mithril Ore inside. Now head to the main lever on the edge of the platform and the forge will descend.

At this point, there will be a massive boss named Grym that approaches with a wave of lava. The boss needs to go down before you can craft your equipment at the Adamantine Forge.

Once the boss is down, you can simply use the forge lever at the bottom left of the Adamantine Forge. A giant hammer will fall down on the Crucible and your final Mithril item will pop out of the Mould section. If you want another item, then follow the same process without any bosses to worry about.

How to Beat Grym

For a more detailed rundown of the boss fight, here is our guide on how to defeat Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3. But if you want the quick version, here’s the main trick:

Grym is shielded from all damage unless he’s in lava. Keep a character by the wheel that releases lava to ensure continuous lava flow. As long as lava is flowing, you can deal damage to Grym. But to make things quick and easy, lure Grym to the middle platform center of the forge, and have a character pull the forge lever to bring a massive hammer smashing down. This will do massive damage, if not killing Grym outright. Just make sure Grym is still heated from the lava when you use the hammer.

How to Open the Adamantine Chest in BG3

If you manage to find the Adamantine chest near the forge as well, then you should try to lockpick the container as soon as you can. Relying on smashing it open won’t necessarily work here unless you have incredibly strong bludgeoning.

Rogue characters can easily pick the lock and you can empty out all the contents at camp. We pulled out the Bloodlust Potion and were able to open the chest in one attempt, so we know your Rogue can get it done in no time.
