How does the remake rank against the legendary originals?

The long-awaited revival of legendary turn-based strategy from the Game Boy Advance era is here! We haven’t had Advance Wars games for a long time, even though there were a couple of sequels for the DS and Game Cube, many people recall fondly the two games released in the early 2000s on the then-new Nintendo portable system. Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re-Boot Camp brought a full 3D remake of the original Advance Wars and the sequel Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising to the Nintendo Switch.

While this is a pretty high score, it’s quite a bit lower than the Metascore for the original games that this remake is based on. The first Advance Wars on the GBA from 2001 has a Metascore of 92, while the 2003 sequel Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising has a Metascore of 89.

As many critics have stated in their reviews, the new Advance Wars remake is excellent, but the visual style of the original remains irreplaceable – as well as the impact those games had in their time, it’s hard to compare the status of the remake today.
