World of Warcraft challenged players to choose a side in Azeroth back in 2004 and ever since, the MMORPG has been a powerhouse in PC gaming. Through numerous expansions and thousands of updates, the World of Warcraft experience has only continued to grow through the years but could that growth include a console launch and controller support? According to a recent datamine, possibly!
Does World of Warcraft have controller support and console launch plans?
Dataminer Benjamin Martins, via WarcraftAddicts, shared the below code found in-game by fellow dataminer “Grayson.” According to the leaker, the below code shares controller support for the PC-only online game and possible console ports as well:
Blizzard community manager Randy Jordan chimed in following the revelation, saying “We always want to make WoW more widely accessible, if possible, so in Shadowlands, we’re attempting to add some support for keybinds, camera, and turning character on controllers such as the Xbox Adaptative controller.”
That makes sense given the above code is literally controller keybindings, but what about a console port? The rumor that World of Warcraft would eventually make its way over on Xbox and PlayStation systems has been one that is no stranger to making the rounds online. It’s clear that many players that don’t have PCs are interested in jumping into Azeroth, but want to do it with a system they are familiar with.
The site also mentioned the PlayStation 4 coding found which many are speculating means a PS4 launch, though at this time that is purely speculation given that the coding found could either be a mistake or coding directly correlating to PlayStation controllers in terms of bindings. That being said, if the coding was made in error, that’s a pretty big whoopsie, which is offering hope to those eager to try out this MMORPG on a different platform.
As with all leaks, rumors, and datamines, keep the hopes of a console release tempered and take all rumors with a grain of salt until the studio itself confirms the news. Though Blizzard has confirmed controller support, they have not confirmed a PlayStation or Xbox launch. We’ve reached out to Blizzard for comment but until we get a yes or no, we’re keeping this one firmly in the rumor pile until further notice.
