2018 was tumultuous in terms of the relationship between CD Projekt RED, the studio behind The Witcher games, and the author of the franchise, Andrzej Sapkowski. When Sapkowski first gave over the rights to his Polish story, he settled for a small one-time fee, voluntarily opting out of a continuous revenue due to his lack of faith that the franchise would succeed. Little did he know that it would become one of the biggest RPGs of the decade, leaving the creative more than a little salty.
Since then, he’s attempted to take the studio to court requesting more money, something that was legally denied due to the contract signed. That being said, the studio tried to work things out with him amicably, but it seemed that the two sides were at a standstill in November 2018. Now, we’ve got official word that the standoff has met a peaceful resolution, which could mean big things for the continuation of the series – with or without Geralt.
CD Projekt RED took to their blog recently to share the good news of the resolution stating that the relationship between the two parties has finally found its rhythm in the hopes of furthering that relationship in the future. “We’ve always admired Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski’s works — a great inspiration for the team here at CD PROJEKT RED,” says Adam KiciÅ„ski, President and Joint CEO, CD PROJEKT. “I believe today marks a new stage in our continued relationship,” KiciÅ„ski concluded.
For those curious about the contract and previous demand of payment, you can see it for yourself right here. For now, we’re glad that this has met an amicable end and the promise of “future cooperation” is exciting for those that fell in love with this series as we did.
