Super Mario Animated Movie Announcement Reveals Bizarre Cast of Voice Actors

Chris Pratt as Mario is certainly a choice.

During the Nintendo Direct aired on September 23, Shigeru Miyamoto came out to talk about an upcoming animated Super Mario film. Currently, the movie isn’t at a point where footage can be shared.

Instead of footage, Miyamoto revealed the cast of voice actors for the film’s characters including the voice of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and more.

Super Mario Animated Movie Announcement Reveals Bizarre Cast of Voice Actors

Several actors who’ll voice characters in the upcoming Super Mario animated film were revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct. The film is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2022.

As noted above, no footage of the animated Super Mario film was shared. Instead, the announcement centered around who will be handling the film, and who the voice actors will be for key characters like Mario and Luigi.

Starting with who’s handling the film, Nintendo is teaming up with Illumination, creators of quality entertainment like *checks list* Despicable Me and Sing. Got it. As for the cast of voice actors, well, many of the choices are baffling to say the least.

It’s clear the film is going for a comedy route having cast the likes of Jack Black as Bowser and Charlie Day as Luigi, though it’s unclear why they decided to cast someone like Chris Pratt as Mario or Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Only time will tell, we guess.

Below, you’ll find the list of voice actors cast in the Super Mario film and the characters they’ll be voicing.

  • Chris Pratt — Mario

  • Anna Taylor-Joy — Princess Peach

  • Charlie Day — Luigi

  • Jack Black — Bowser

  • Keegan-Michael Key — Toad

  • Seth Rogen — Donkey Kong

  • Fred Armisen — Cranky Kong

  • Kevin Michael Richardson — Kamek

  • Sebastian Maniscalco — Spike

In addition, Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will have some cameo time in the Super Mario film. All in all, while it’s nice to hear that Nintendo is trying to create a fun, animated Mario film, it kind of feels like they’re trolling everyone with this cast.

Honestly, if this hadn’t been part of an official Nintendo Direct, everyone would probably have assumed this announcement was fake. But of course, we’ll leave the final verdict up to you. Do you like the casting choices for the animated Super Mario film?
