During the State of Play presentation on March 9, 2022, Square Enix once again stepped up and announced two new games for this year. The first is a new IP, a tactical/real time hybrid strategy game called The DioField Chronicle. The second is a new addition to the Valkyrie Profile series called Valkyrie Elysium.

Starting with The DioField Chronicle, Square Enix’s trailer introduced the game’s style, characters, plot and even gameplay during a jam-packed two-minute trailer. This game uses what Square Enix is calling the RTTB, or Real-Time Tactical Battle system. In action, the game seems to involve characters being directed where to move and watching that play out RTS style. That means you can interrupt with a command, such as an attack or changing the movement course.
The second game is fascinating, as it’s a new entry in a series Square Enix has struggled to find an audience for. Valkyrie Elysium is the fourth game in the Valkyrie Profile series, which has spanned time and videogame space from the PlayStation to mobile phones.
This entry appears to be a character action game, akin to something like Bayonetta or NieR: Automata. It also looks like there’s an assistant character, but what their gameplay role is remains unknown for now. This seems like an unusual shift, but the series has shifted genres almost every game.
Both of these games are slated for a 2022 release window. Valkyrie Elysium is set for release on PlayStation 4, 5 and PC (via Steam). Meanwhile, DioField Chronicle is headed to every modern platform, including the Nintendo Switch.
