Sony Expects No PS5 Launch Delays Due to COVID-19

Will they, won't they is a common question right now regarding COVID-19 and delays.

COVID-19 has continued to spread and while some of the earlier areas of impact are on the road to recovery, a lot of countries are still in the thick of it as the escalation continues. Because of the pandemic, many industries have been impacted, including the gaming industry, and while there were some reports that the PlayStation 5 could very much be delayed from some of the top analysts to-date, one Sony rep is saying it’s still too early to tell.

An unnamed Sony spokesperson told Bloomberg this morning that they don’t see “any notable impact” on the launch of the PlayStation 5. Given that we don’t have a solid date for launch, simply the holiday 2020 window, “notable impact” simply means that though their anticipated date may be pushed back a little, it shouldn’t be so drastic as to knock it out of that holiday timeline. While that’s good news for many, they did add that they are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will update the community as soon as possible.

Sony’s response comes hot on the heels of Microsoft’s statement saying while the Xbox Series X console launch remains unaffected, certain games may see a later launch due to the work-from-home mandate and disruption of production processes.

The effects of COVID-19 have been plentiful, both medically and on the economic side. Major films and games are being delayed, companies are temporarily shuttering, and case numbers continue to climb as testing becomes more and more readily available. While it all seems scary, it’s important to remember that the CDC continues to offer careful guidelines on how to stem the spread as well as how people can take of themselves and people they love.
