Today, Rockstar Games announced Red Dead Online, the online multiplayer portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. A beta for Red Dead Online is scheduled for November 2018, well beyond the game’s October release date. Very few details were revealed beyond that, though we’ll likely hear more closer to the launch date.
Red Dead Online is a new iteration of the original multiplayer experience featured in the first Red Dead Redemption game. Much like GTA Online, Red Dead Online essentially offers a virtual playground for players to saddle up alongside their friends for a more free-form, sandbox gameplay experience.
According to Rockstar, Red Dead Online will blend “narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways.” Red Dead Online takes the setting and scale of Red Dead Redemption 2 and transforms it into a multiplayer experience that players can explore alongside friends or by themselves.
“As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch,” explains Rockstar in today’s press release. “We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.”
Red Dead Online will be available as a public beta this November, and beta access will be free for anyone who owns a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 on consoles. Red Dead Redemption 2 is slated to launch on October 26 for PS4 and Xbox One. Be sure to check back here for details.
