Rocket League is going free-to-play and making moves over to the Epic Games Store, so what does that mean for Steam players? No need to worry, Steam players will still be able to get their game on, but the move to EGS does impact those that have yet to get into the competitive world of Rocket League.
Psyonix has confirmed that the popular arena game is going free-to-play this summer, which will mark its switch over to the Epic Games launcher. For those still enjoying the Steam version, there’s no reason to make the jump. The studio promises that the Steam version will still receive “full support for future updates and features” and this move also won’t impact anything with the Rocket Pass. The two launchers can also still play together, so none of that amazing crossplay is lost with this move.
Another positive is that no one has to worry about leaving any items earned behind. This move isn’t going to impact anything gained throughout the game’s lifespan up until this point and the Steam version will operate as normal. The only difference is regarding this change is that new players will not be able to download the Steam version, which is fine given that they are still compatible in terms of crossplay.
For those that have enjoyed this online game up until this point, there was a small reward for those carrying on within the arena. According to the studio, “Anyone who has played Rocket League online between its release and July 21 will receive the Faded Cosmos Boost and Legacy status, which grants new items including a Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels, Huntress Player Banner, Est. 20XX Title, as well as all past Rocket League-branded DLCs if you don’t already own them, and 200+ “Common” items will be upgraded to “Legacy” quality. Items will be granted at the launch of free to play.”
Since July 21st has passed, here is what fans that may have missed out on can still get: “Anyone who plays Rocket League online after the announcement on July 21 and before the launch of free to play will receive Legacy status, which grants new items including a Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels, Huntress Player Banner, the Est. 2020 Title, all past Rocket League-branded DLCs, and 200+ “Common” items will be upgraded to “Legacy” quality. Items will be granted at the launch of free to play.”

For those that enjoy the console versions or want to mitigate over onto the Epic Games Store, players can link their platform of choice to an Epic Games account so that inventory items may cross over. The team also provided a small update that they will be going more into detail about this here shortly.
