Detroit: Become Human is the latest narrative adventure from developer Quantic Dream, and like past games before it, Detroit does a great job of bringing its world to life in vivid detail that makes it hard to put down. Step into the future, where Androids have become a daily part of human society, working as servants, caretakers, and even investigators in criminal affairs. Detroit: Become Human paints a stunning picture of a future rife with technology, and when that technology begins to backfire, the world unravels around it, thrusting players into a delightful and thrilling story unlike anything else we’ve seen.
Gameplay
Like Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human works similarly to a point and click type game. Players approach different objects, which they can interact with and move around. This helps to bring the game world to life, as it allows the players to directly interact with things and bring about change. Along the way, you’ll also find several sequences of quick time events, where you’ll need to time your button presses at the right moment in order to fend off an attack, jump, crouch, hide, as well as a plethora of other actions. This helps to give the players a direct connection to the action, which makes it easy to get lost in the game for hours.
Players will need to use the loop we’ve discussed above as they clean up dishes, investigate crime scenes, and even go on the run. Narrative’s a big part of the equation here as well, so expect lots of dialogue, cutscenes (many with interactive-driven conversations that directly change the outcome of the chapter). It’s a unique and exceptionally well-crafted experience that blends together extremely well.
We were also very big fans of the way that the game handles choices, as each choice you make feels important and can change the very outcome of the game. Every playthrough can be unique, and making the wrong decisions early on can completely lock off specific chapters, leaving you without vital story information. It’s a fantastic way to tell a story that works well with the gameplay mechanics, and Quantic Dream outdid itself.
Visuals and Performance
Detroit: Become Human is one of the best games we’ve seen—without a doubt. The game’s graphics look pristine, down to every rain drop that falls from the sky. On top of this, the animations of the people and androids are all realistic, and the facial expressions, lip movements, and other small animations help to bring the game to life in a beautiful way.
As for performance, we never noticed any kinds of dips—despite the exceptional graphics—and we’re pleased to say that Detroit: Become Human ran smooth for the dozens of hours that we played it.
Quantic Dream has crafted a beautiful world, and while the game isn’t available on more technologically advanced hardware like you see in high-end PCs, the developers painted a stunning picture on the capable PS4 hardware.
Game of the Week
There is a lot to love about Detroit: Become Human, and our love for the game only grows as we dive deeper into the stories that Quantic Dream has embroidered within this science fiction, dystopian future. On top of containing a fantastic gameplay loop, outstanding visuals, and stellar performance, Detroit: Become Human also does something that many games fail to do well these days—make us feel.
Emotions are high in Detroit’s three main story branches, and the way that these characters feel, and the choices you have to make are strong enough to pull at your heartstrings. With such a strong emotional story, beautiful visuals, and outstanding gameplay, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that we’ve chosen Detroit: Become Human as our Prima Game of the Week.
