The next game to come from Square Enix’s “HD-2D” line is Live A Live, a full remake of the cult classic JRPG originally released on the Super Famicom and never localized. While diehards may already know these characters, they won’t know what they sound like! A new trailer has been released to introduce the game’s cast, which also shows off more of the remake’s sights and sounds. And that includes examples of English voiceovers.

Similarly to a SaGa game, or even Octopath Traveler, Live A Live is split into multiple standalone story segments players can choose in any order, before a more unified final chapter. The characters are shown with their localized names, time periods and brief descriptive one-liners about their scenarios. We’ll list them here:
- Pogo – Prehistory: Fight to Survive in an Age without Words
- The Sundown Kid – The Wild West: Take a Stand against Murderous Outlaws
- The Heart of the Mountain Shifu – Imperial China: Entrust Your Legacy to a Young Disciple
- Oboromaru – Twilight of Edo Japan: Brave a Deadly Castle for the Greater Good
- Masaru Takahara – Present Day: Face the World’s Best and Become the Strongest
- Akira – The Near Future: Defy Maniacal Madmen with Your Secret Powers
- Cube – The Distant Future: Discover the Truth of a Tragedy in Space
- Oersted – The Middle Ages: Embark on a Journey to Defeat the Lord of Dark
These characters, spread across time and space, will eventually come together and undoubtedly fight a big bad. I haven’t played the original, so that’s just an assumption! Check out the trailer below:
This video gives a much more clear look at Live A Live, showing how much of a true remake it is. This is no spruced-up Super Famicom game, that’s for sure. And it makes sense, considering the regular price point and physical release.
Live A Live comes to the Nintendo Switch on July 22, 2022.
