Mass Effect, Dragon Age Series Will Be Powered by Frostbite 3

The Battlefield 4 engine will underpin BioWare's next big games.

It was recently confirmed that the next Mass Effect game will be developed using the next-generation game engine Frostbite 3.  It was not immediately known whether or not Dragon Age III would also use Frostbite 3 or the previous version of the software, Frostbite 2.

Aaryn Flynn, the general manager at BioWare’s Montreal and Edmonton studios, has confirmed that the next Mass Effect and Dragon Age games will both use Frostbite 3. “For everyone who’s been asking after the #BF4 reveal, #DA3 and the next Mass Effect are also using Frostbite 3. It’s awesome,” he tweeted

Battlefield 4, the first game using Frostbite 3, was revealed during GDC.  The middleware was made by DICE and is being disseminated among the various internal studios for Electronic Arts.

Currently, little is known about Dragon Age III, other than its setting after the events of Dragon Age III and its focus on a Chantry Inquisitor.  Frostbite 3 is scaleable to support both current and next gen systems, so the games could be coming to either (or both).
