Rumors of the will they won’t they regarding the Silent Hill IP have been rampant for years, horror fans are hungry for the iconic franchise that turned the genre on its head. Over the past year, numerous sources have cited “proof” that a new Silent Hill game is in the works, including citations from inside developers, analysts, and even retailers, but it looks like if one is in the works, Konami wants it to be a secret because they are saying all reports of a new Silent Hill game are false.
A North American PR representative for the company reached out to Rely On Horror to talk about the rumors saying “We’re aware of all the rumors and reports but can confirm they are not true.” They added, “It’s not to say we are completely closing the door on the franchise, just not in the way that is being reported.”
While the last bit may offer some hope, it’s important to remember that they did technically release something from the Silent Hill franchise last year: a slot machine for casinos. So, that could be the not fully closed door but we’re hoping for more in terms of eventual plans to return to a series that did so much for the horror genre.
What’s interesting is that when Prima reached out to our own sources, one of which used to work closely with the Silent Hill franchise, they told us that revisitation was in progress and confirmed to us that this was meant to be a “fresh slate” for the series going into a new generation. What that means in correlation to Konami’s most recent statement is muddy, but we’ve reached out to a few more of our contacts to see where the disconnect is happening because the two statements are very much at odds with one another.
For now, because the company’s stance is the truth in the moment given, we are laying the Silent Hill game rumors to rest. Hopefully, the rest isn’t permanent, but it does make us wonder: If you could have a new Silent Hill game, would you want it to be totally new or a remake like how Capcom is tackling the Resident Evil franchise?
