Injustice 2 Mobile Devs Apologize for Poison Ivy Pride Event

Yep, that's a yike

It’s Pride month 2021, meaning tons of folks out there are celebrating, well, Pride! The weird side effect being a bunch of corporate brands, especially social media accounts, joining in on the festivities. One such attempt came from the Injustice 2 mobile game, which began running a Poison Ivy-themed event. As it turns out, the optics of said event were so bad that an apology had to be issued.

Injustice 2 has an event type called Global Challenge, which basically pits the whole community against a specified boss fight. The more times that boss is defeated overall, the better the rewards get. Poison Ivy, a canonically bisexual DC Comics character, was the marquee character of this month’s event. The problem is, well, that means the community was tasked with beating her up hundreds of thousands of times. Whoops!

This tragic lack of foresight resulted in the whole situation being called out en masse, noting that while Pride is good, the Pride character being on the receiving end of a community beatdown was on the wrong end of tone deaf. An apology was quickly issued, which you can see below:

With the apology, tweets for the event have been removed from social media. However, the event seems to be running, and the developers told players they’d still receive the rewards for participating. Obviously Injustice 2 is a fighting game and that requires… fighting. Still, optics are what they are and there were probably other approaches that would’ve gone over better.
