The Game Awards 2019 proved to be a massive success with the viewership having doubled, passing over 45 million views. This year’s showcase very much lived up to all of the “Oscars of the gaming community” comparisons with a ton of flash, celebrity appearances, and surprise reveals. While the actual ‘awards’ part seemed far too rushed in favor of flash, there’s no denying that Geoff Keighley and the team went big this year and it definitely paid off.

“We are grateful and humbled by the continued growth of The Game Awards over the past six years,” said Geoff Keighley, creator/producer of The Game Awards. “These record-setting results show that gaming culture continues to reach new audiences around the globe, and these numbers re-affirm our distribution approach of streaming the show live and free across more than 50 digital video platforms.”

The showcase aired on December 12th across more than 50 digital video networks on a global scale. The show peaked at 7.5 active concurrent viewers while also trending #1 worldwide on Twitter for the entire show. Additionally, over 1 million tweets went out on the social platform talking about the awards ceremony and all of the announcements it brought.

As for the full breakdown through the years:

  • 2019: 45.2 Million (Up 73%)
  • 2018: 26.2 Million (Up 128%)
  • 2017: 11.5 Million (Up 202%)
  • 2016: 3.8 Million (Up 65%)
  • 2015: 2.3 Million (Up 23%)
  • 2014: 1.9 Million

Arguably the most surprising reveal was Microsoft forgoing their own event and next year’s E3 to reveal the first real look at the next generation of Xbox, the Xbox Series X. There was also some naked humping with the reveal of The Forest sequel, and we got our first stunning look at the surprise Hellblade 2 on the horizon.

With how big The Game Awards 2019 was, we can’t wait to see what next year has to offer.
