Friday the 13th: The Game Says RIP To Dedicated Servers

Gun Media might be working on something else, though.

The announcement that dedicated servers are shutting down for Friday the 13th: The Game is depressing, but not surprising. The game has experienced a number of issues in the three years following its release, most notably the legal battle waged by the screenwriter of the original film, Victor Miller, and the original film’s producer, Sean Cunningham.

The lawsuit has prevented any new movies from being made, and it’s made it so that Friday the 13th: The Game can’t release any new updates. The team has still been able to support the material already in the game, but have been unable to add things in, like DLC content.

Now, the game takes another blow as its dedicated servers are shutting down.

Friday the 13th: The Game Says RIP To Dedicated Servers

In a sobering announcement from Gun Media, it was revealed that the dedicated servers for Friday the 13th: The Game are set to be shut down following an upcoming patch releasing this November.

For those still interested in playing the game, P2P matchmaking for Quick Play lobbies will be available. The game itself will remain up for sale so if you don’t own the game and want to play it in the near future, you’ll be able to even after the dedicated servers are closed.

Additionally…

“The Database Servers, however, will stay active and continue to house all player progression and unlocks, so users can continue to play Friday the 13th: The Game via peer to peer Quick Play and Private Matches,” notes the blog post from lead community developer Matt Shotcha.

Other things shutting down include the game’s online forums which will be locked, but still accessible for people looking to find archived information about various aspects of the game.

“As for the Double XP, CP, and Tape Drop Rates that we set in the start of the pandemic, the team will opt to leave this active indefinitely.”

The announcement concludes by thanking fans of the game that helped make Friday the 13th: The Game what it is today, and it’s recommended that you follow Gun on social media to find out what comes next for the team.

Teasing the “what comes next” aspect even more, the co-creator of Friday the 13th: The Game, Wes Keltnor, tweeted a response to people asking about future multiplayer horror games from Gun Media.

The tweet implies that the team may have something planned already. It wouldn’t be surprising if this were to be the case, but it’d certainly be exciting. We guess we’ll have to wait until Gun Media makes a formal announcement about their next title (if they are working on one) to say for sure.
