It seems that every month we are treated to a new game adaptation live-action series reveal. With so many in the works already, including Devil May Cry and Halo, it seems that Hollywood is dead set on ending the video game-to-big screen curse. The latest project comes from Sony and Square Enix: A new Final Fantasy live-action TV series has just been confirmed.
Sony, Square Enix, and Hivemind (the studio behind Netflix’s The Witcher series) are coming together to take on a completely original story based in Eorzea. For those that played Final Fantasy XIV, this area will be familiar. It looks like instead of directly trying to pull from the games and missing crucial details, the team is going the completely original route, offering a brand new experience for all to enjoy.
The Expanse’s Jason Brown will be joined with The Mummy’s Sean Daniel and Bloodshot’s Dinesh Shamdasani as producers for the upcoming show, with Jake Thornton and Ben Lustig as the lead writers and executive producers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will showcase new and familiar characters spanning across the entire franchise with a tagline of “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land of conflict.”
With Final Fantasy having decades of tales told, this is one of those series that has a fan-base that is so powerfully dedicated and passionate. The move to do an original take is smart; offering a new experience without running the risk of ‘butchering’ an already told narrative.
We don’t know when the Final Fantasy live-action TV series is set to release, though the confirmation that it’s on the way is definitely exciting.
