It’s a sad day for Battlefield 2042 fans as EA DICE has announced their plans to make the current seventh season its last. This news doesn’t come as a shock to some players as the game’s player base has been dwindling ever since its launch back in November 2021.
However, it’s not all bad news. In the same breath, EA and DICE also mentioned their plans to divert their attention to the future of the Battlefield franchise.
While EA DICE announced they will no longer be supporting Battlefield 2042 in terms of content updates, the game will not be shutting down anytime soon. General Manager Byron Beede assured fans that server and gameplay maintenance would continue, and new events, challenges, and modes would still be happening in the future.
With that said, he reiterated that Season 7, Turning Point, would be the last seasonal content drop for the game. And to bring to life the “ambitious vision…and unlock the vast potential of the series’ class-based squad-play and immersive, intense battles”, EA DICE will be recruiting the Dead Space team, EA Motive, to assist in the future development of Battlefield games.
For players wondering about the future of the Battlefield series, General Manager Byron Beede stated, “Battlefield is an experience that is defined by the passion of its community as much as its team-driven tactics and explosive battles, and I look forward to the day that we can tell you more about what’s coming next”.
Battlefield 2042 has lost a significant part of its player base ever since its launch, with many players opting to return to previous Battlefield titles or switch to different FPS games altogether.
Currently, Battlefield 2042 has a concurrent player base of 10,128 players on Steam. The all-time peak sits at 107,006 players. Battlefield 2042 is nowhere near one of the most-played games on Steam, which could explain why EA DICE has decided to move on to other projects.
