Bethesda and iD Software both want to make sure they do DOOM Eternal right, so they pushed the game’s release back by a few months into 2020.

The studio reached out to deliver the news to Prima Games saying, “To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020.  We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.”

In addition to the launch date change, they are also tweaking a few of the in-game features to better make launch day an even greater success:

  • Invasion Mode, which will allow you to enter another player’s game as a playable demon, will release as a free update shortly after launch.
  • DOOM Eternal for Nintendo Switch will release after the other platforms. We will announce that date in the future.
  • DOOM 64 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in addition to Nintendo Switch. We are adding DOOM 64 as a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal on all platforms so you’ll be able to download and play this classic game, for free, just for pre-ordering DOOM Eternal. DOOM 64 will be released on March 20, 2020 on all platforms.

As sad as it always is to hear of a delay, it’s the right decision on Bethesda’s part. The DOOM franchise is widely beloved and making sure that the game is given its rightful attention to detail is the right move and the perfect way for the studio to handle development going forward.

No longer are we taking on demons in November. DOOM Eternal launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on March 20, 2020.

“Experience the ultimate combination of speed and power as you rip-and-tear your way across dimensions with the next leap in push-forward, first-person combat. Powered by idTech 7 and set to an all-new pulse-pounding soundtrack composed by Mick Gordon, DOOM Eternal puts you in control of the unstoppable DOOM Slayer as you blow apart new and classic demons with powerful weapons in unbelievable and never-before-seen worlds.”
