The PC game’s release last night caused huge disruption to Blizzard’s servers leaving thousands of eager gamers unable to play.

The pre-order figure does take into account the players that received a copy of the game with their World of Warcraft Annual Pass subscription as part of a special promotion.

A massive 8000 in-store midnight launches were attended around the world last night.

Blizzard top dog Mike Morhaime commented on the spectacular popularity of the launch saying:

“This launch is a culmination of many years of hard work by our development team, and many years of passionate, dedicated support from gamers around the world.

“We’re grateful for the enthusiasm of our players, and for the help of our beta testers in getting the game ready for release. Now that Diablo 3 is live, we hope everyone’s ready to have a hellishly good time slaying demons and collecting loot in Sanctuary.”
