Microtransactions are pretty common in games these days – just look at most of the releases from Electronic Arts – but now Activision appears to be joining the party.  It’s been announced that this pay-cash-for-in-game-items system will soon be making its debut in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, allowing players to customize their in-game appearance and weapons for a small fee.

The Microtransactions will consist as “either personal customizations or nice little luxuries,” according to Activision’s Dan Amrich, but that they will not affect gameplay in any way.  As we said, completely optional.

Personalization Packs will be available for $1.99 (160 Microsoft points) apiece, each with unique weapon camos, targeting reticules, and a calling Card.  You’ll also be offered an Extra Slots Pack, which lets you use ten additional Create-a-Class slots for additional customization.  Additional media storage space will also be introduced, along with Flags of the World Calling Card Packs for a buck a pop (80 Microsoft points).  As a bonus, players will also be able to get the Nuketown 2025 map free of charge, regardless if they buy anything or not.

“At the end of the day, all of these items are completely optional, and were created for players who’ve asked for more customization options,” said Amrich.  “If that’s not you, that’s fine.”

Soooo…will you be buying anything?  The content arrives first on Xbox 360 this week, and will hit PC and PlayStation 3 at a “later date”.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is available now for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.
