The publisher announced over the weekend that, in its partnership with production company New Regency, that the film based on its Assassin’s Creed franchise will release on May 22, 2015 during the Memorial Day weekend.

The film doesn’t have a director or supporting cast assigned yet but Michael Fassbender, who appeared in X-Men First Class and last year’s Prometheus, will be in the lead role.  Scribe Michael Lesslie is currently working on the script.

The Assassin’s Creed film has some challenges ahead of it, as it will be releasing not only against Marvel’s long-awaited Avengers sequel (which will once again be directed by Joss Whedon), but also J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII, which will release later in the month.  Both sequels are sure to be blockbusters, but with the right director and cast, Assassin’s Creed should be able to draw its own audience.

One thing’s for sure: it’ll be way better than Uwe Boll’s Far Cry film.
