Battle Royale is forever, but apparently doesn't need a sequel as Respawn talks about a possible Apex Legends 2.

Much like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Apex Legends took the battle royale genre by storm. Because of that, an Apex Legends 2 desire was sure to come up even though the latest free-to-play game is still very much in its infancy. While Respawn has a lot of exciting plans coming down the pipeline, a sequel isn’t among them.

“Most people don’t realize how long it takes to make anything, and so a character for us takes about a year and a half to make,” Executive Producer Drew McCoy said recently in an interview with USgamer. “So we’ve been playing Wattson since early last year, but we have so much stuff in the pipe right now coming that people are always like, ‘So what are you guys gonna do for this or that?’ Like dude, we’re thinking years ahead at this point.”

With “years ahead” of content currently in the works, it makes sense then that a sequel wouldn’t even be a concept at this stage. That’s the beautiful thing about games of this genre, if done right – they have potential to last years and years and years. If done poorly, which we’ve seen with a few failed battle royale attempts in the past year, then devs tend to start back from square one. That being said, Respawn has been very receptive to feedback, especially with its seemingly lackluster season 1, so to see them continuously be in the frame of mind concerning longevity bodes well for the game’s future.

“We’re never going to make an Apex 2; hoping next Season 72 is awesome,” he then joked. That’s a good philosophy to have and we’re excited to see where the road leads for this particular battle royale adventure.

Apex Legends is now available, free to play, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
