As reported by outlets like Deadline, award-winning actor Anthony Mackie has been cast in the lead role of John Doe in the upcoming Twisted Metal live-action adaptation. While exciting, this isn’t the only big casting news for Mackie as he was also recently cast as the next Captain America in the Captain America 4.
On his IMDB page, Mackie has a few other projects in the works including Panopticon, Signal Hill, and We Have a Ghost. Currently, We Have a Ghost is filming while the rest are in pre-production.
Previously, Mackie has starred in films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War as Sam Wilson (Falcon). It’ll be interesting to see Mackie as Captain America in Captain America 4, but perhaps even more interesting to see him as John Doe in Twisted Metal.
Either way, it sounds like he’s being kept quite busy!
Anthony Mackie to Play John Doe in Twisted Metal Series
In a report from Deadline, it was revealed that Anthony Mackie has been cast as John Doe in the live-action adaptation of Twisted Metal. The series comes courtesy of Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, as you’d expect.
Speaking on the casting of Anthony Mackie as John Doe, Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, noted:
“We’re thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board. His ability to blend comedy, action, and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we’re creating.”
Joining in, Glenn Adilman, Executive Vice President at Sony Pictures Television, said:
“We’ve been big fans of Anthony’s phenomenal body of work over the years and knew he was the only actor who could play a character as complex, funny, and compelling as John Doe. Fortunately for us, he agreed.”
Adding to the action-packed comedy of Twisted Metal are writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland). Both will write and executive produce. Meanwhile, Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) will also write and executive produce for the Twisted Metal series.
Oh, and speaking of executive producers, Anthony Mackie will also serve as an executive producer along with others such as Herman Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios. For those unfamiliar with Twisted Metal, Variety offers a fantastic explanation of what people can expect from the TV series:
“The show is about a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.”
As of right now, little else is known about the series, though we imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more about it in the future. Twisted Metal isn’t the only live-action adaptation that Sony is working to adapt as they also have a live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, and a live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima.
After hearing Anthony Mackie has been cast as John Doe in the live-action adaptation of Twisted Metal, we’re curious to hear your thoughts.
