2K Sports’ WWE 2K14 introduces a number of new modes, including 30 Years of WrestleMania. The WWE Superstars and Divas are also on board for the latest installment, including The Big Show.
Reminiscent of Andre the Giant and Big John Studd before him, the pound-for-pound “World’s Largest Athlete” is a hulking man. He weighs 485 pounds and is seven feet tall. He wears 22 EEEEE shoes, a 22 1/2 ring and has a 64-inch chest.
Big Show made his in-ring debut in WCW where he left a massive impression as The Giant, and captured the WCW Championship on two occasions, along with the WCW Tag Team titles. The Giant had an immediate impact in WCW, focusing his attention on some of the biggest icons in the industry, from Hulk Hogan to “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. On that note, The Big Show talks about WWE 2K14 in this exclusive interview.
A lot of kids love playing as you in the WWE video games. Do you ever play the WWE games?
No, I haven’t got a chance to play any of the video games. I have a problem with the wrestling games. I don’t like them. I don’t. I like the classic All-Stars game; that was fun. But somehow, Rey Mysterio slamming in a video game doesn’t sit well with my stomach. I can’t do it.
Have you ever talked to the game developers about your in-game avatar?
I’ve pulled a couple of the game creators to the side and said, look, you need to up my power ratings or we’re going to have a problem. So yeah, I have. The video game makers, all of them, I’ve sat down and had conferences with them. It’s like, listen, I need to be tough because if I’m not, I’m going to come find you.
While WrestleMania is a big part of WWE 2K14, 2K Sports used SummerSlam to unveil the new game. What separates SummerSlam from other events?
I think SummerSlam is a little bit different because we hold it in LA. This is where the stars come out, and this is where you get a lot of bang for your buck, as far as media attention and the whole star feel of a big live pay-per-view event. Also, the best thing about SummerSlam is the fact that it’s a week-long event for us to give back to our communities, our WWE universe. When you put all the stars coming out and the people that have all the influence on multimedia and Facebook/Twitter, and you push all that forward, you’re able to draw attention and awareness to it.
How do you give back to the community as a wrestler?
I love doing work with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. John Cena has done over 400 Make-a-Wish gifts. He sums it up best when he says it’s very humbling to be a child’s wish. It’s amazing for us to meet these children and their families, and the things they’re going through. It’s such an overwhelming emotional experience to be able to do that. For me, it’s humbling because I’m a small town kid from South Carolina, and the fact that I’ve been fortunate enough to influence my industry to where someone would make me their wish, it’s just overwhelming and humbling.
WWE 2K14 is available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
