Pokemon has always held its fair share of mysteries. From the haunting Missingno glitch to the fact that Meowth can somehow speak human language, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company have never shied away from introducing oddities into the Pokemon universe.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is no different. While Paldea has tons of hidden nooks and crannies scattered about, there is one hidden cave that stands out in particular.
Known simply as the “Area Zero Hidden Cave”, it is the only area in which the rare Pokemon Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant can spawn. However, upon further inspection, this cave seems to hold more than meets the eye…
Area Zero Hidden Cave Secrets Unearthed
The first thing you’ll notice when entering this cave are the strange symbols marked upon the ground. While these symbols could be disregarded as just a simple way to enliven the Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant encounters, many believe they are too mysterious to be solely decorative.
As you can see, there are four circles with a square in the center. I am hereby naming this symbol the “Ultra Venn Diagram”.
Now, if we are trying to decipher the meaning behind this symbol, it seems to be ideal to start with the four circles. Why four? Also, why do the circles seem to contain arrows?
You can clearly see this exact symbol in the splash screens of both Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (top right). It has to be important!
Some speculate that the circles may have something to do with the four legendary Pokemon of the Ruinous Quartet. If you aren’t aware yet, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is full of ancient Chinese references, including the Ruinous Quartet.
Chinese Lore in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
The History classes at the Academy teach us that Paldea once had a King that received four gifts. These gifts were somehow corrupted by negative emotions and turned into the Ruinous Quartet. Because they began destroying Paldea, they were eventually locked in the caves that we all so eagerly let them out of…
If you look into ancient Chinese Mythology, the Ruinous Quartet are actually based on the ancient Chinese myth of the Four Perils, which has mythological as well as apparent astrological significance.
There are many similar artistic renditions of four Chinese mythological creatures. Upon a cursory glance, you can tell these images are extremely similar to the symbols found in the hidden Area Zero cave.
Now, because Thundurus and the other Forces of Nature already represent the Four Auspicious Beasts from Chinese Mythology, maybe this means Thundurus, Landorus, Tornadus and Enamorus will be added to Scarlet and Violet in the future?
Paradox Suicune and Virizion: A Possible Connection to Future DLC?
While adding the Forces of Nature into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sounds interesting, maybe these symbols have something to do with the official renditions of Paradox Suicune and Virizion.
“Paradox Suicune” is a combination of the three Legendary Beasts: Entei, Suicune and Raiku. “Paradox Virizion” combines the Swords of Justice: Virizion, Cobalion and Terrakion.
Many are assuming that these Pokemon will be added in the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC. If this is true, they may play a part in the central aspect of the symbol — the square.
Maybe, if the Ruinous Quartet are present in the player’s party, these Paradox Pokemon will be summoned at the center of the glyph!
Of course, this is all speculation and I could be completely wrong. Nevertheless, it was fun to dive deep into possible explanations for these mysterious symbols.
