2019 is shaping up to be a great year for RPG fans, and there’s a lot to look forward to in the year ahead. We’ve rounded up some of the top upcoming role-playing games that are expected to launch sometime in the coming year so that you can add them to your wish list for 2019.
The Surge 2
The Surge 2 is the follow up to 2017’s Souls-like, sci-fi action RPG, The Surge. Publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck13 are busy preparing the sequel for its 2019 release, where players will get to suit up once more to explore a brand new, decimated city environment. The game is being made with an improved game engine, so expect to enjoy an enhanced version of this challenging action RPG next year. The Surge 2 is slated to launch sometime in 2019.
Code Vein
Another Souls-like action RPG slated for 2019 is Bandai Namco’s upcoming title, Code Vein. In Code Vein, players take on the role of a Vein, a vampiric character who must use special powers to salvage what’s left of a dystopian world ravaged by vicious creatures known as the Lost. Code Vein was originally supposed to release in September 2018, but Bandai Namco moved the release to 2019 to “dedicate additional time to further develop Code Vein,” to ensure that the game “delivers on the expectations set amongst media and fans.”
Kingdom Hearts III
Of course, we can’t talk about upcoming RPGs without mentioning the highly anticipated third installment to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, Kingdom Hearts III. Sora will embark on a new adventure with Donald Duck and Goofy that involves an evil threat known as the Heartless. A multitude of iconic Disney and Pixar characters have cameos in the upcoming game as well, including characters from Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. Look out for Kingdom Hearts III on consoles in 2019.
The Division 2
If you’re looking for a shooter RPG, then Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 should be added to your list for 2019. As the follow up to Ubisoft’s 2016 action RPG of the same name, The Division 2 will bring back the challenging missions and fun co-op gameplay of the original game with new specializations and game modes to set the sequel apart. As a Division agent, players are tasked with restoring a devastated Washington D.C., where a pandemic has ravaged the city and left chaos in its wake. The Division 2 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 15, 2019.
Anthem
All eyes are on Bioware as they gear up to release their upcoming action RPG, Anthem, which is slated to launch in February. Published by EA, Anthem is an online multiplayer action RPG where players explore a world full of dangerous beasts. As a member of the Freelancers, players will gear up in powerful suits of armor called Javelins, which allow its wearer to take on superhuman capabilities. You can embark on your journey alone, or team up with friends to pilot your exosuits together and take down hostile threats as a team. Anthem is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 22, 2019.
