Are Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Mods Safe to Use?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now on PC, which means the mods are coming but are they safe to use since there is an online component to the game? 

The Rockstar wild west title isn’t the first game to offer both a single-player and multiplayer experience. The problem is, many companies have a very strict no modding policy when it comes to any online game because it can be perceived as cheating – or can even hide hacking efforts. So naturally, the question then is it safe to mod Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC?

Given that Grand Theft Auto, including the most recent GTA V, has a plethora of insane mods that blow us out of the water, we’re willing to bet that the same rules apply to the wild west. That being said, to not get your account banned or flagged for hacks, we recommend keeping that modding fun – and Thomas the Tank Engine – out of your online play. You want to mod? Keep it offline.

“Take-Two has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties,” reads a post on Rockstar’s support site reads, courtesy of our friends over at PC Gamer.  

TL&DR: Keep it offline and you should be good to go. 

For those that have followed my previous works at other sites, you know that I’m a huge fan of mods. When I’m not making them, I’m using them, and have covered them religiously over the course of my career. That being said, I’ll go ahead and issue the same warning I always do: Make sure to back up your files! Though most mods go off without a hitch, with a game as massive as Red Dead Redemption 2, you don’t want to lose all of that hard-earned progress just in case a mod file turns sour or was downloaded incorrectly. Back up those files and protect your game.
