How to Change Pokemon Nicknames in Scarlet and Violet

Changing a Pokemon’s nickname is as easy as ever in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. With only a few clicks of a button, you can rename your Pokemon to whatever you desire.

Here’s how to rename your Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet:

  • Press the X button to open your Party.
  • Select the Pokemon you wish to rename, and hit “Check Summary.”
  • In the Summary, press X to Change the Pokemon’s nickname.
  • Type in the nickname of your choosing and choose “Enter.”

It’s as easy as that! And you can rename Pokemon as many times as you want for a single Pokemon if you really feel like giving your critters an identity crisis.

When renaming Pokemon, nicknames will have a character limit of 12, and you’ll be restricted from using any profanities (or at least whatever Nintendo deems to be inappropriate). But that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative.

Many trainers will either have the rename notification removed to save time, or will spam the B button when the notification pops up. This method allows even the most impatient of trainers to come up with funny nicknames for all of their PokeFriends.

In previous Pokemon games, players would have to find a NPC called the Name Rater, who would allow you to rename your Pokemon. Seems tedious right?

The current rename feature was introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield, and has persisted in the franchise since.

Can You Rename a Pokemon You Recieved in a Trade?

No, you won’t be able to rename any Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet that you received in a trade or that you didn’t catch yourself. This is likely out of respect to the original trainer the Pokemon came from, and to preserve a sense of unique identity attached the Pokemon.

But unfortunately, this can also lead to some awkward situations where you end up with a terrible name for a Pokemon you wanted but couldn’t catch yourself. Or the very common situation of having a foreign Pokemon named using an alphabet you can’t read.

Perhaps this will change in the future, but for now, you’ll just have to get comfortable with what you got or otherwise look for a different Pokemon.

Now that you know how to rename Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet, it’s time to get out there and come up with some vulgar nicknames!
