Microsoft Adds Dolby Vision Support to Xbox Series X | S

Dolby Vision is now available on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as announced today by Microsoft in an Xbox Wire post. The post begins with a quick summary of what Dolby Vision offers in regards to visual improvements.

  • Over 100 next-gen HDR games optimized for Series X|S are currently, or will soon be, available in Dolby Vision.

  • Thousands of classic HDR10 and Auto HDR games can benefit from improved picture quality thanks to Dolby Vision enhancement on Series X|S.

  • Series X and Series S are the first consoles to support gaming in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

  • Dolby Vision is compatible with next-gen features of the Series X|S such as DirectX raytracing, automatic low-latency mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate (VRR), and up to 120fps.

All of this sounds great, though some may have lingering questions about what Dolby Vision is and what it can do. Reading through the Xbox Wire post, it notes that gamers with “compatible Dolby Vision-enabled TVs” will be able to enjoy the rollout of Dolby Vision on Series X|S.

Farther down in the Xbox Wire post, a section on how to optimize Dolby Vision with your gaming TV is provided.

“You’ll need two things: a Dolby Vision-enabled television; and you’ll need to enable your television’s next-gen gaming settings, such as automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) or variable refresh rate (VRR). Many 2020 and 2021 TVs, along with a select number of older TV models that support Dolby Vision, have unlocked next-gen gaming features designed for gaming in Dolby Vision.”

Not sure whether your TV supports Dolby Vision? The post shared a quick and easy way to check and find out.

“To check if your display supports Dolby Vision, press the Xbox button to open the guide. Then go to Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details.”

If you see that your TV does in fact support Dolby Vision, your next question is likely in regards to how to enable it. Fortunately, the Xbox Wire post provides instructions for this as well.

“For the best Dolby Vision experience, we recommend using automatic low-latency mode (ALLM). To enable Dolby Vision, press the Xbox button to open the guide. Then press Settings > General > TV & display options > Video Modes > Dolby Vision for Gaming.”

And that’s all there is to it for gamers with Dolby Vision-enabled TVs! All in all, it’s exciting to hear that Microsoft has added Dolby Vision support for Series X|S in addition to the consoles’ existing Dolby Atmos support.

It’s also exciting to hear that so many games will benefit from the addition of Dolby Vision support. Of course, we’re curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. Are you happy that Microsoft added Dolby Vision support?
