Nickelodeon Planning Avatar Airbender Universe With Multiple Films and Series

Speaking with Deadline, Nickelodeon network president Brian Robbins shared plans to create an Avatar Airbender universe that spans multiple films and TV series.

“We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe,” Brian Robbins told Deadline.

“Mike [DiMartino] and Bryan [Konietzko] are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.”

While we don’t know what and who the story will focus on, Nickelodeon shared the news that the first of these films will be an animated one led by Avatar series creators and executive producers Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The animated film is set to begin production later this year. Not only will DiMartino and Konietzko lead the upcoming animated film, they’re also leading the newly created Avatar Studios division as announced by Nickelodeon last month.

In the official press release from Nickelodeon, Avatar Studios was described as follows:

“Nickelodeon today announced the launch of Avatar Studios, a newly formed division designed to create original content spanning animated series and movies based on the beloved world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Original creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will helm the studio as co-chief creative officers, reporting to Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation.

The Studio’s output will bow on platforms including Paramount+, ViacomCBS’ subscription video on-demand service; on Nickelodeon’s own linear and digital platforms; as well as on third-party platforms and in theaters.”

The press release from Nickelodeon makes it sound like the creators will have a wealth of resources at their disposal when it comes to the creation of these future Avatar projects.

“Avatar Studios is a way to give Mike and Bryan the resources and runway to open up their imaginations even more and dive deeper into the action and mythology of Avatar as we simultaneously expand upon that world,” Brian Robbins says in the press release.

Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino also mention in the press release that there are “still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life” and we can’t help but be excited to see hear more about these projects once Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon, and creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino are able to share new information.

Until then, we recommend checking out the full interview with Brian Robbins on Deadline, and reading through the press release from Nickelodeon regarding the creation of Avatar Studios.
