After a couple delays, and who can blame anyone for delays right now, Larian Studios is on track to launch its early access beta period for Baldur’s Gate 3. This highly-anticipated RPG, based in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, will come to PC and Google Stadia on October 6, 2020. Ahead of the launch, Larian Studios has released some information on what content is available in this version of the game, with a specific focus on the races and classes available at launch.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access Races and Classes
Players can expect to have access to around 25 hours of content during early access, which the developers have noted is a slice of the game intended for multiple playthroughs. Up to four players will be able to join up, and the character creation suite appears to be one of the most ambitious out there. There will be 16 races to choose from, many of them also featuring multiple “sub-race” options. Over 150 different heads will be available across these options, each with a photorealistic style using scans of real life actors and models. The following races and sub-races will be available for early access:

- Human – No sub-races.
- Githyanki – “peerless warriors from the Astral Plane.” No sub-races.
- Elves – High Elf (focus on magic) Wood Elf (archery, stealth, speed)
- Drow – An “ancient schism” between two elven deities led to this race, and you can choose between two warring factions, the Seldarine Drow or the Lolth-Sworn Drow.
- Half-Elves – Split across High/Wood/Drow
- Dwarves – You can pick a Gold Dwarf, a thriving culture based on craftsmanship and family values. You can also pick a Shield Dwarf, a more troubled group that has survived losing wars and displacement.
- Halflings – You can choose the traditional, stealth-friendly Lightfoot Halfling or the poison-resistant and sturdy Strongheart Halfling.
- Tieflings – There are three demonic bloodlines: Asmodeus (fire and darkness), Mephistopheles (arcane magic), and Zariel (physical strength that incorporates fire somehow).
The six classes available will be Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, and Wizard. Each class will have access to two sub-classes, although Larian Studios hasn’t provided the full list.
Between all the race and class choices, it looks like the Baldur’s Gate 3 player base will have no problem with variety and diversity. Even the NPCs, of which 600 will appear, will supposedly all look different based on the huge number of options in the creation suite.
