The next generation of gaming is just around the corner and because of that, the rumor mill is in full swing. The latest rumor regarding the upcoming Microsoft addition claims that the Xbox Series X will support Steam and Epic Games Store titles. While that may seem far-fetched, it’s actually not anymore given how much support has pivoted in 2019 with first-party exclusives making the jump to Steam. Give a little, take a little, this rumor could have merit.
The latest rumor comes from Italian gaming site Game Experience (via SegmentNext) and says that sources have told them that the Xbox Series X will support both PC clients in terms of library access. According to the site, the next Xbox will be able to alternate between a Windows 10 mode that will have the tower-esque console operate like an actual PC tower.
It’s no secret that Phil Spencer and the rest of Team Green have been slowly but surely closing the gap between consoles and PCs and 2019 really showed that effort in full. With Halo all on Steam now and even more first-party titles available on the PC platform, making this move would make perfect sense especially given the effort they made into designing the console itself to look like a PC setup.
That being said, no matter how much it makes sense, it’s important to take all leaks and rumors with a massive grain of salt until Microsoft themselves make an official announcement. Luckily for us, the team seems very chatty about what’s next so hopefully, some more clarification will be coming down the pipeline soon.
At this time, we don’t have a release date yet for the Xbox Series X but we do know that it is slated for the holiday season in 2020. Are you excited?
