Hideo Kojima has been very artful when it comes to teasing Death Stranding. It’s not that he’s showing us nothing, he’s actually shown us quite a bit, but the way he’s showing it leaves the whole picture still a complete mystery. His new IP is so mysterious in fact that it’s not even a genre we know of, it’s something else entirely.
Kojima-san took to Twitter to respond to inquiries about Death Stranding and where it falls on the genre scale given its multiplayer component. When asked, he responded: “As I’m getting similar questions so I shall re-post. DS is not a stealth game. Could move subjectively but not a FPS shooting game either. By incorporating with the concept of connection(strand), it’s a totally brand new genre called action game/strand game(social strand system).”

Though there will be online multiplayer, it won’t be how you’re thinking. Players will interconnect with other players, but they won’t actually encounter those players within the world – instead, the world is comprised of “strands” all woven together for a bigger picture.
Though we did get our first glance at some gameplayer earlier this year, we’ve yet to see – at least that we know of – the ‘multiplayer’ in action. Kojima-san has mentioned in the past that there will be many more reveals in the coming months, so stay tuned!
