If you want to survive long in the harsh world of Ark: Survival Evolved, then you’re going to need to know how to build a house and escape the dangerous elements of the island. Not only is a house great for escaping the elements of nature—like rain, the sun, and other things—but it also is great for escaping the likes of Raptors and other dangerous dinosaurs you’ll run into along the way. In this article we’ll teach you everything you need to know to build a house in Ark: Survival Evolved, and start your journey into become a master survivor.
How to Build A House
The first thing you will want to do is level up. This can easily be done a number of ways—collecting resources, fighting smaller dinosaurs, etc—until you reach level 4. Once you reach level 4, you can then start unlocking the Thatch building options, like the Thatch Wall, Thatch Roof, Thatch Doorway, and so on. Unlock these items, and then it is time to start collecting the supplies.
With Thatch buildings you’re only going to need three resources, all of which can be gathered very easily when you first start out. Fiber can be acquired by picking berry bushes that you find on the ground, while both Wood and Thatch can be received from chopping away at trees. If you want more Wood, be sure to use your Axe to chop down trees. However, if you wish to receive more Thatch, then you’ll want to make use of your Pickaxe when chopping down trees.
Once you have the stuff you need, open up your inventory and navigate to the Crafting tab. Here you’ll be able to see a full list of all the Engrams that you’ve currently unlocked. The ones you can’t build at the moment will be greyed out, and you can hover over them to see what supplies you are missing.
We’d suggest starting with a smaller house, and then adding onto it as you go, as you’ll want to be able to easily upgrade once you unlock better building materials. For now, though, let’s start by crafting four Thatch Foundations, one Thatch Doorway, one Thatch Door, and seven Thatch Walls. This should give you enough to make a small two by two home that will offer a nice place of rest for you as you continue building yourself up.
Once the foundations are placed, next you’ll want to place the walls. Be sure to build your doorway somewhere that you can easily reach, and then when you’ve placed everything, go ahead and craft four Thatch Roofs. This will allow you to close in your home, creating a fully safe environment for your character to sleep inside.
