This article covers how to calculate the strength and power of each of your Pokemon in Pokemon Go. There are several factors that go into determining the strength and power of each Pokemon, and having this information can be valuable out in the wild. Sit back and relax while we cover how this is done in Pokemon Go.
Knowing the strength and power of your Pokemon can be helpful when trying to take down a gym. While the combat power (CP) is generally considered a good determination of the strength and power of each Pokemon you’ve captured, there’s a bit more to it. In addition to the CP for a Pokemon, there are hidden stats that determine individual power so you can separate Pokemon, even if they have the same CP.
The combination of Attack, Defense and Stamina is what helps to determine the real power and strength of each individual Pokemon. The Individual Value (IV) that these stats help to determine is rated on a scale of 0 to 15, with 15 representing the most powerful stats in the game. The strongest Pokemon would therefore have a Stamina rating of 15, and a combined Attack and Defense rating of 30 (15 for Attack and 15 for Defense).
It’s almost important to note that even if two Pokemon have the same CP, their power levels may differ due to a number of factors. Your Trainer level, evolutions, and various power ups all factor into the IV of a Pokemon, which means if your Trainer level is low your Pokemon may be weaker than a Pokemon with a lower CP simply because the IV is lower (which is the overall determining factor of power and strength).
The easiest way to calculate the Individual Value of your Pokemon is to use this IV Calculator tool. Navigate to the page, then select the IV Rater tab near the top. Select the species of your Pokemon, then input your Trainer level and position the CP arc to match the CP of your Pokemon. Verify that the Stardust and Candy costs are correct (which also confirms the CP is accurate), then enter the exact CP and HP of your Pokemon using the sliders at the bottom.
When all of the information has been put into the IV Calculator, click on the Rate My Pokemon button at the very bottom to see the Individual Value of your Pokemon. The next screen will give you a quick summary of your Pokemon’s fighting potential to make it easier to understand what this means for you. This should give you a better idea of where a Pokemon ranks compared to the other Pokemon in your Pokedex.
