Overwatch Earns $296 Million in May

Blizzard’s newest IP was the top digital earner last month in only eight days of release.

According to digital research firm Superdata, Blizzard’s new intellectual property is a confirmed hit. In only eight days of release in the month of May, Overwatch earned an estimated $269 million in digital revenue across PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was the number one earner for the PC and ranked number five for the console market.

Blizzard opted to go with a more traditional model, charging between $40 and $60 for Overwatch, depending on the version purchased. However, microtransactions in the form of loot boxes ranging in price from $2 to $40 helped pave the way for the title’s high earnings. With a competitive mode and heavy esports coverage planned over the next few months, Overwatch is not showing any signs of slowing down.
