In Frostpunk 2, the people live and die with the generator. When you run out of Coal and Oil, you still need an alternative source to fuel the generator. The only way to get around it is by acquiring Cores and researching ideas that use those Cores to give you a great source of heat for the city. Some ideas or add-ons may require several Cores, and there’s only one way to get them. Here’s how to get Cores and use them in Frostpunk 2.

Where to Get Cores in Frostpunk 2

The main way to get Cores is through expeditions. These expeditions allow you to explore the world outside your playing area, hoping to find new resources to bring back to your city. These expeditions require Logistics Districts and Frostland Teams.

Logistics Districts provide the entry and exit point for Frostland Teams to make their expeditions. If they find other resources that come in the form of a deposit, you’ll have to bring those resources through a sky bridge or trail connecting back to the main city, specifically the closest available Logistics District.

When you start expeditions, you need Frostland Teams to perform them. You get more Frostland Teams through building and expanding Logistics Districts. Use those Frostland Teams to explore other regions by pressing the icon in the upper-right corner. If you hover over the regions, you’ll see the possible resources you might find before even exploring them.

Look for the regions where you can see Cores might show up. Activate the expedition and wait for your expedition to finish. After the expedition, you’ll unlock icons in that region, and you’ll go through each of them until you see the one that gives Cores. This is the best way to get Cores, and you should use them wisely.

What Are Cores Used For in Frostpunk 2?

Cores can only be used on upgrades and add-ons, especially for the generator. If you open your Idea Tree, you’ll see some ideas that require Cores, such as upgrading your heating through the Advanced Coal Mine research trees. You can also look for generator upgrades, which is coincidentally one of the main objectives of Chapter 2.

You’ll need Cores to upgrade your generator so that it can start using Oil and has a bigger source of fuel for heat. You should focus your Cores on these main objectives and start using the extra Cores for other upgrades when needed.
